What's it like to be an administrative assistant? How different is it from being a receptionist?
Asked by laurenhonish
I've been a receptionist for 5 going on 6 years for a non-profit then for-profit skilled nursing hospital and the next door assisted living facility. If I were to get a job as an admin assistant what responsibilities so I expect to pick up that's different than the receptionist responsibilities?

Best Answer:
Admin Assistant is a general title that covers office based duties, can be anything from answering the phone, reception, filing, diary management, corresponding via letters and emails, typing, making tea, other office duties, etc. I would ask for a job description before you apply to tell you a bit more about what is involved.

A:
Depends on the office but generally means answering phones, making appointments, typing, ordering supplies, answering correspondence-- many receptionist duties and then some. But the pay tends to be better.

The jobs are basically the same to me. Administrative assistants carry more responsibility than a receptionist. They help with running the office not just answer the phone and staple papers.

A receptionist's main duties are usually to answer phones and greet visitors to an office. An administrative assistant will deal with more paperwork or computer work, so software skills become much more important. Being familiar with Word and Excel to create basic documents and spreadsheets will be important. Organization and time management skills will also be needed in an administrative assistant role, since you will have to manage multiple tasks coming from multiple individuals.

admin assistants tend to have more responsibilities, better pay and the position tends to mean that you are exercising more independent judgment. (Less oversight by someone else.) It really depends on the actual job though, so I would make sure you get a complete job description. Some places call it admin assistant as more of an ego-booster than a real change in responsibilities.

I am an Administrative Assistant and it entails being the assistant to the Administrator a/k/a Manager a/k/a BOSS and keeping that person organized and focused on tasks and deadlines. It is a downplayed position that truly holds much self sacrifice and demands much more respect than it is given.
