What European countries have big energy/engineering industries?
Asked by Xmon910
I want to do an internship in Europe in Summer 09. I am studying chemical engineering in the US and I want to find the countries that have industries in energy - petroleum, alternative energy, renewables, etc. I have heard Austria, Sweden, Denmark, Netherlands, Spain, France, and England are pretty big on it. Any suggestions? + Germany. Thank you

Since you are studying chemical engineering you know the "supermajors", the six largest energy companies in the world. Three of them have their headquarters in Europe: BP (London), Royal Dutch Shell (The Hague) and Total (Paris). I live in The Netherlands and know that Royal Dutch Shell is a very prestigious and sought after employer here. They are very selective in their engaging of new employees and usually get the brightest. They have their registered office in London. I can't tell you much about the others, but I take it you will find a good place for your internship there as well. If you are more interested in renewable energy and its development you really should have a look at Germany. Hermann Scheer is a prominent figure and has (had) lots of influence on the development of renewable energy in Germany. Feed-in electricity tariffs have been introduced to encourage the use of new energy technologies such as wind power, biomass, hydro power, geothermal power and solar photovoltaics. They have become the leading market for solar cells worldwide because of the Renewable Energy Sources Act. Other countries: In Denmark wind power accounts for 19% of total electricity production, in relative terms the highest in the world. Sweden and Norway are strong in hydro power. Don't know if this is relevant since you are studying chemical engineering, but you asked about renewables.
